Gaining weight back after rapid weight loss?

Question #1 : Is it safe for a 50 yr old man to lose 40 lbs in 4 months?
#2 : Same 50 yr old man did not lose stomach; still looks 6 months pregnant. (Although runs on treadmill 10-15 minutes a day.)
#3 : Same man, on beta blockers (for cardiac arrythmia) is drinking 2-3 alcoholic drinks per week.
#4 : Main question : Husband has abandoned his diet plan, now eating out a lot, and is gaining some of the weight back. Is this unhealthy?
Answer:
Absolutely. Everything you describe is unhealthy.Having excess weight around the middle is a strain on the heart. Drinking alcohol (even in moderate amounts) is unhealthy....but it sounds like he is drinking more than in moderation only. Eating out isn't only bad because of the excess calories of "restaurant portions", but because you have no way of knowing how the food was prepared, what oils or trans fats are used, whether the food is organic or full of pesticide residues (etc). And finally, losing alot of weight and then proceeding to rapidly gain it back is a shock to the system. I wouldn't recommend that either.Having said all that, I have to add this: You can't change him, no matter what. If the threat of a heart attack or declining health or the begging of those who love him hasn't made an impact so far, then it never will. It is totally up to him to decide whether he wants a good quality of life, or if he wants to throw his health down the tubes. That sounds harsh, but I KNOW what I'm saying....I had to watch my father abuse his own health for years, and now my husband is doing the same thing to varying degrees. There is one thing I would suggest: Go to www.healthmasters.com and order some of their CD's on healthy living and nutrition. Dr. Ted Broer shares some things which are startling - others are just basic common sense, but listening to those CD's together MAY just convince your husband that he needs to make some permanent changes - not just temporary minor adjustments - to achieve the healthy life he can still have. I have a set called "Eat, Drink And Be Healthy", and this has radically changed my thinking in what constitutes "healthy" or not healthy......it has also changed the way I eat, shop at the grocery store, and ultimately, the way I feel and look.If he won't listen to you, he MIGHT listen to an expert.....but at least see if you can get him to agree to listen to one CD a day with you. (And you know what - these tapes might change how YOU shop and prepare food at home, so at least to some degree your husband would reap the benefits by default.)Good luck!
